• sh Include this option if you want to suppress header pages. Without this option, lpd prints a header page that identifies the individual who queued the print job.

• if= This line identifies the input filter. Most distributions use a script in the spool directory to call the filter with appropriate options to process a print job. If you omit this line, lpd won't use a filter; it passes the results directly to the printer.

Much of the tricky part of configuring the printer comes in setting up the print filter. There are several "smart filter" packages available for Linux. Most Linux distributions ship with their own filter packages, so you shouldn't need to install anything special to get a filter working with your printer queue.

In fact, most distributions include printer configuration utilities that help you set up all the details of both the / etc/printcap file and the printer filter configuration, including Ghostscript options. For instance, Figure 20.5 shows the printer configuration area of Caldera's COAS utility. You can select options using drop-down option buttons or type entries directly into data fields, as appropriate. The details of GUI printer configuration utilities vary from one distribution to another; for instance, Red Hat uses a program called printtool for this task.
