If you must have the latest board, check into the commercial OSS drivers, which frequently include drivers for more recent products than the standard kernel or ALSA drivers. Whatever product and drivers you purchase, the stable of Linux audio applications is wide enough for most users, even including sophisticated digital audio and MIDI editing programs. For day-to-day use, the set of mixers and audio file players that come with most Linux distributions is quite adequate.
