Most motherboard designs place the CPU, RAM, bus slots, and other components all on one plane, which lies horizontally in a desktop case or vertically in a tower case. Because PCI and ISA cards require a certain amount of height, this design imposes a minimum height requirement on the resulting computer system. Particularly in desktop cases, however, a low-profile design has a certain appeal. A low-profile system is a desktop design that's shorter than normal for PCs. The current low-profile design of choice is known as NLX. To achieve this configuration, the motherboard includes no PCI or ISA slots. Instead, the motherboard supports a daughter card, or riser, on which the PCI and ISA slots reside, as shown in Figure 2.10.

Chapter 2

In theory, an NLX motherboard offers a major advantage when you want to upgrade hardware, because the design allows you to remove the motherboard from the computer without disturbing the expansion cards or (assuming the case is designed properly) the disks. This fact makes a motherboard upgrade very easy, as compared to an upgrade of a conventional system. On the other hand, NLX systems tend to be quite small, which limits your ability to add internal devices like multiple hard disks, CD-ROM drives, and tape backup drives.
