Note

If you want to use the TiMidity application to play MIDI files using TiMidity's software wavetable, you can do so. I described TiMidity earlier in this chapter.

• -e The -e option directs output to external MIDI devices. You can use this option to play a MIDI file on an external keyboard, for instance. You also use this option to play a sound using wavetable MIDI on some sound cards that include wavetable MIDI support.

Various GUI MIDI players exist, in addition to the command-line variety. KDE includes a TiMidity-based MIDI player called kmidi, and TiMidity itself can be run in GUI mode, as described earlier in this chapter. If you don't want to use a TiMidity-based program, you don't need to do so. The xplaymidi program, for instance, adds a GUI interface to the playmidi command, as shown in Figure 10.10. Some GUI MIDI playback tools, including xplaymidi, add enough overhead that the timing of MIDI playback can be disrupted, particularly on a slow or heavily loaded computer.

Beyond mere MIDI playback lies MIDI editing. The prime MIDI editor (or sequencer, as this 10

type of software is more formally known) for Linux is Jazz (http://www.jazzware.com), shown in Figure 10.11. A MIDI sequencer lets you change the notes, change the instruments, O

cut and paste music, and make other alterations to a MIDI score. You can even create a MIDI ND

composition of your own from scratch. In essence, a MIDI sequencer is to MIDI files what a text editor is to ASCII files. If you want to pursue MIDI music for more than casual file playback, a MIDI sequencer is a must-have utility.

Figure 10.10

xplaymidi shows what instruments a MIDI file contains, and uses a bar graph to display when these instruments are being used.

A MIDI sequencer enables you to edit a MIDI file much as you can edit an ASCII file or digital audio file.
