At the heart of every digital computer is the CPU, and the choice of CPU can be felt through the rest of the computer. The CPU determines what OSs and software the computer can run and is a major factor in the speed of the computer as a whole. The CPU also determines what other hardware components can be used, most directly by determining the motherboards that are compatible. The motherboard's features determine what add-on cards, RAM, and other devices work with a computer, however, so the CPU has an indirect influence in this respect.

Linux works with a wide variety of CPUs, but is most strongly associated with x86 and compatible CPUs. Hardware for x86 computers tends to be inexpensive, and the combination of this inexpensive hardware with the open source Linux OS brings unprecedented power to low-cost computers.

If the CPU is the heart of a computer, the motherboard is its circulatory system. The motherboard functions as a means of connecting the CPU to all the other devices in the computer, either directly (as when the CPU accesses RAM plugged into the motherboard) or through another component (as when accessing a hard disk through a SCSI host adapter). The motherboard is generally the largest circuit board in a computer. It contains a slot or socket for the CPU, slots for memory, slots for expansion cards, connectors for hard disks, floppy disks, and external devices, and a power connector, among other features. These features are all illustrated in Figure 2.1, which shows a typical Socket 7 motherboard.

This chapter does not, however, go into any details about configuring your motherboard or integrating it into a complete computer system.
