Optical media present some unusual characteristics to a Linux computer. They're normally read-only in nature. Recordable technologies provide a means to write data, albeit not in as seamless a way as can be done with other removable media. Because CD-ROM drives are an almost universal fixture on modern computers, however, recordable CD technologies provide an excellent means of distributing large amounts of data to a few sites. They're also a very useful means of backing up your own data—either data files generated by your applications or your entire system.
