Latest Desktop Technology

By keeping up with the latest technologies, the Fedora Project helps users discover the latest innovations in desktop technology. In the past year, Fedora releases have featured major new desktop technologies such as KDE 4.1 and GNOME Online Desktop (described in Chapter 3).

Fedora was the first major distribution to include KDE 4 as its default KDE environment. The most obvious new features include the ability of the new Plasma desktop to place widgets directly on the desktop. This allows mini-applications such as photo viewers, system monitors, and stock tickers to sit directly on the desktop. The Photon multimedia feature provides a single framework for KDE music and video applications. New Oxygen Artwork provides a whole new look to the KDE desktop. A lightweight file manager named Dolphin is now used as the default file manager.

The goal of the GNOME Online Desktop is to provide a desktop suitable for running applications directly from the Web and storing information online. This allows the desktop to be the window to applications like Facebook, Gmail, Flickr, Netflix, and other online services. Figure 18-1 shows an example of the Online Desktop.

By default, the Online Desktop opens the Firefox Web browser when started. It also includes the Sidebar on the left side of the screen — a panel of the applications you often run online.
