Converting Package Formats

For the most part, to install a package you must first find a copy of that package in the format supported by your distribution. Sometimes, though, doing this is difficult or impossible. When that's the case, your best course of action may be to convert a package in an alien format to whatever package format your distribution supports. The Debian developers have created a tool to do just this. Known as alien, this program ships with Debian and is also available in RPM format. (If you can't find it with your RPM-based distribution, check http://rpmfind.net.). Unfortunately, versions for RPM-based distributions are sometimes finicky to install or may not work correctly.
