Exchanging Files File Format Compatibility

If you mount a foreign filesystem but the data files you copy from it appear as gibberish in all the applications you try, mounting the filesystem will have proven useless. Thus, in any multiboot environment, you should give some consideration to your data file formats. Broadly speaking, there are two types of file formats:

• Cross-platform formats, which are based on open standards that can be implemented by anybody

• Proprietary formats, which are restricted to just one application

As a general rule, cross-platform file formats are better, but the lines can sometimes be blurry and there are a few exceptions.
