Managing the Text Mode Environment

When using text-mode tools, chances are you want to take best advantage of your video hardware. Many Linux tools are written with a display of roughly 80 characters by 25 lines with monochrome text in mind. Even very old IA-32 hardware, however, can display more and wider lines than this, and can display text in various colors. GUI xterm windows are also much more flexible in their display capabilities. Knowing how to take advantage of these modes can make text mode much more appealing.
