Mastering Important Linux Commands

Linux includes many text-based commands for doing real work. Many of these tools are extremely specialized and complex, so I can't present more than a bare introduction to these programs in this chapter, which covers some of the most important general-purpose text-mode tools. If you have specific needs, they might be described in other chapters of this book, or you might be able to find helpful information in a specific program's documentation or web page.

Note You can use any of the programs described in this chapter from a text-mode login or from a shell run in a text-based window, such as an xterm, in a GUI environment. Utilities that change text-mode settings, such as the resolution, are best run from text mode, though.
