Providing Hostnames with a DNS Server

Running a Domain Name System (DNS) server can be useful for several reasons. One important reason is to provide DNS service to outsiders for a domain that you operate. For small sites, though, it's usually much easier and safer to rely on an outside source, such as your domain registrar, to provide DNS service. A second reason to run a DNS server is to provide DNS services for local computers. These services can include a caching DNS server to improve DNS lookup speeds and the handling of a local domain for a private network.
