Working with Sound Files

Computers have become multimedia centers in many homes and offices. One important component of this role is the ability to record and process pure audio files. Linux provides several tools (including sound recorders, file format converters, and multimedia players) to help you with this task.

Note Most of the tasks described here require that you have a working sound card. Chapter 1, "Optimizing System Architecture Usage," describes sound card configuration, so you should read it before proceeding if the sound isn't working on your system.
