The standard reference implementation for *NIX is ISC's BIND software, which is also available for Microsoft platforms (Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, and Windows Server 2003). We'll cover basic BIND hardening suitable for every configuration. Since running a public DNS server is, by definition, a task with implicit responsibilities, we recommend pursuing a full understanding of its configuration beyond the hardening tips provided here. The de facto standard reference for BIND is DNS and BIND, 4th Edition, published by O'Reilly.
