Until now, you have read about the way you can provide a network interface with an IP address. To be completely functional on the network, you have to specify some routes as well. At a minimum, you need to set the default route. This route specifies where packets need to be sent that don't have a destination on the local network. The IP address of the router used for the default route is always a router on the same network where your server resides; just consider it to be the door that helps you get out of the local network. To set the default route, you can use two tools: the ip tool and the route utility.
