In general, it is not a good idea to tune the kernel on your system. The reason is simple: Novell provides a tuned kernel with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server. This is a working kernel, and the entire system is built around that kernel. If you are going to upgrade or modify that kernel, you may lose your support. Also, if your kernel is updated automatically, your kernel tweaks will be wiped out each time the kernel is updated. Therefore, in all situations, before you make any modifications to the kernel, make sure you can do so without losing support.
