DigiKam is the most popular application for working with digital photographs on a Kubuntu system, though other applications are available, most notably KPhotoAlbum (http://kphotoalbum.org). DigiKam makes it easy to import photos from a digital camera or other storage device, and provides a number of convenient plug-ins for common photo editing and touchup tasks.

"Open with DigiKam" is one of the default options on a KDE 3-based system when you attach a standard digital camera to a USB port on your system. (You can also add this option to a KDE 4-based system by following the instructions in the section entitled "Customizing Device Recognition of a KDE 4 System." earlier in this chapter.) You can manually start DigiKam by selecting the K Menu O Graphics O DigiKam - photo management menu command on a KDE 3-based Kubuntu system, or by selecting the K menu O Applications O Graphics O Photo Management - DigiKam menu command on a KDE 4-based Kubuntu system.

If you started DigiKam manually, you can use the commands on the Camera menu to locate and browse the contents of a camera or storage device that contains your digital photos. If you start DigiKam from the Device Notifier menu after attaching a digital camera or other storage device containing photos to your system, DigiKam automatically scans your device for you. When new photos are found on a camera or other storage device, DigiKam displays the dialog shown in Figure 21-20.

To import the images from your camera or storage device, select one of the options from the drop-down Download menu, which is available at the bottom of the dialog shown in Figure 21-20. Because I am somewhat paranoid, I typically select Download All to download the images without removing them from my camera. Selecting this option displays a dialog like the one shown in Figure 21-21, which enables you to select an existing album or create a new one into which to import your photos.
